Jumia and Konga extend rivalry to payment
The two leading ecommerce platforms in Nigeria, Jumia and Konga seem to have extended their rivalry to the payment space following yesterday’s announcement by Jumia of its new payment solution called JumiaPay.

According to Jumia, JumiaPay will ‘strengthen’ the company’s market position. According to Jumia, JumiaPay is a third party online payment solution provides a safer, faster and more convenient online payment experience.

Unlike Konga’s KongaPay that is onlyl available in Nigeria, JumiaPay will eventually be available in the 23 African countries the company currently is. JumiaPay isn’t going to just be a payment option for ecommerce, it could also be used to pay utility bills and airtime top-ups.

“Jumia Pay has a very simple yet crucial objective: go even further in providing a safe, a secure and a convenient shopping experience to our customers, building trust along the way between us, our thousands of sellers and our millions of customers. We are very proud to be able to offer this new service to our customers and participate in building financial inclusion in Africa to unbanked or underbanked populations.”– Jeremy Hodara, coCEO of Jumia.

Nigeria is the first country where JumiaPay will be available.
